Hospital
The beginning of hospitals can be traced back to the time when such institutions provide shelter for the sick or weary travelers and people who were too poor to be treated at home. However as societies progressed, hospitals have moved beyond the mere function of just providing shelter for patients, but also to provide a conducive environment for patients to recuperate with a sense of safety, comfort, dignity and repose. Hospitals today also have to adjust to variable work load, uncertainty and critical situations. Demand for the hospital will also change with higher life expectancy and healthcare focusing more on prevention and intervention rather that treatment.
An example of a hospital that encompassed the new functions mentioned would be the newly-built Khoo Teck Phuat Hospital in Yishun, situated in the northern part of Singapore. The hospital has been designed with the patients in mind, with wards facing the greenery and improved ventilation from the natural cool air, and the lush greenery coupled with the Yishun pond to provide a conducive environment for relaxation and healing.
